Mixed spice is a warm, mostly sweet blend of cinnamon, coriander, cassia, ginger and cloves.
It’s a versatile spice blend commonly called for in British desserts, cakes and puddings and its earthy flavours pair perfectly with the sweetness of apple and mixed fruit.
Make your own Hot Cross Buns or include mixed spice in a classic American pumpkin pie.
How To Use
Add a pinch to nut butter for fruit bread or enjoy in herbal teas and mulled wine.
Make sweet spicy nuts. Combine 1 tbs sunflower oil, 1 tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp mixed spice & 2 tbs honey with 400 g mixed nuts. Roast on a tray at 140°C for 20 mins, stirring half way.
For an easy dessert, stuff 2 cored apples with a combo of 40 g sultanas, 2 tsp brown sugar and 1tsp mixed spice. Add a dob of butter on each and pour ½ cup hot water into the baking dish. Bake at 190°C for about 30 mins or until tender.
