Binchotan charcoal is an active carbon produced from selectively cut oak branches. This premium charcoal is named after Binchoya Chozaemon a traditional artisan who began making it in Japan in the 17th century.

Also known as white charcoal, even though it is black, Binchotan is renowned for being the purest and most effective activated charcoal. It is highly valued for its superior microporous structure that absorbs unwanted impurities from water and air. The surface area of just 1 gram of this charcoal exceeds the contact area of 500 square metres.

These natural sticks draw out chlorine, other chemicals and odours from drinking water while alkalizing it to soften the water and improve the taste. They can also be used in the fridge, pantry and laundry to remove odours and moisture from the air.

They will last as a water or air filter for up to 6 months. Then they can be reused to deodorise shoes, improve soil quality and drainage in the garden, or to remove odours from kitty litter.

And as an added bonus, these waste-free charcoal sticks are carefully wrapped in eco-friendly kraft paper rather than the usual plastic packaging.  Each stick is approximately 11-12 cm long and weighs about 50 grams.

How to Use:

Boil the Binchotan stick for 5 minutes (at 100o C) before the first use. Remove from the water and allow the charcoal to cool. It is then ready to use as a water filter.

Place one stick (approximately 50 grams) in a 1 Litre container of water. Cover and allow it to stand for at least 4 hours, or overnight to filter and soften your drinking or cooking water.

Each stick can be reused for about 6 months – after a refresh at 3 months. After 3 months of use wash with fresh water and a brush (no detergent) then boil for about 30 minutes. Air dry in the sun. Ready to go for another 3 months!

When the charcoal comes to the end of its use as a filter (after 6 months) these waste-free sticks can easily be repurposed. Break it into smaller pieces and pop some into a gauze bag or an old stocking to use in your shoes to deodorise and reduce mildew.

Also great to place in shoe cupboards, wardrobes and the car. Charcoal is a great soil conditioner and will improve drainage in pot plants or garden beds. Or add it to your kitty litter to absorb unwanted smells.

Storage:

Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place away from sunlight.

Shelf Life:
