Brown Sugar is made from refined sugar cane. The soft, more moist texture and golden brown colour is due to the amount of natural molasses being retained in this sugar.
It has a subtle sweet aroma and light caramel flavour. Brown sugar can be used in hot beverages; and is great in sauces and preserves, baked goods and desserts, or savoury recipes.
How to Use:
Brown Sugar is lovely in chai, tea, coffee or hot chocolate. It can be used 1:1 to replace white and raw sugar, or honey and other liquid sweeteners, in sweet and savoury recipes. Great in marinades and dipping sauces, hotpots and curries, or homemade baked beans.
This brown sugar adds a lovely flavour to preserves including chutney and pickles, fruit mince, marmalade and jams. Try it in a dark blackberry or raspberry jam. For desserts, this sugar is irresistible with baked apples or poached pears. Tumble fresh fruit salad or berries in a little brown sugar, standing for 20 minutes for a rich syrup, then serve with natural yoghurt or pure pouring cream.
This sugar is fabulous for making sweet sauces, toffees, or spun sugar baskets. Brown sugar is delicious in baked goodies; especially chocolate cakes and brownies, old fashioned cookies, caramel tarts, dark fruit cakes and warming steamed puddings or try ginger and pecan with caramel sauce. It may not be suitable for some ‘light’ recipes like meringue, due to the molasses and higher water content.
